New identification for Ghana 20.10.1997 Birds 400c
Double-toothed Barbet
Double-toothed Barbet Lybius bidentatus
Ghana 1997 Birds Bearded Barbet
Bearded Barbet Lybius dubius
The bird on this stamp has been identified by me and others as Double-toothed Barbet. The scientific name on the stamp, Eubucco bourcierii, is the scientific name for Red-headed Barbet, and this Barbet is not a Red-headed Barbet. But what about the English name - Bearded Barbet? Michael Stupp has contacted me. He believes Bearded Barbet is an appropriate identification. There is no black breast stripe, but everything else fits: massive yellow bill with grooves, colour of legs, no red wing bar, lower underparts not red, bare skin around eye wide. The Bearded Barbet occurs in Ghana. Range is Sahel (Senegambia to central Central African Republic). The Bearded Barbet is a new species on stamp.
